Meyer’s second record, simply titled Barbara Meyer II, shows a strong move toward her world beat aesthetic. She immediately draws you in with the opening tune Be Here Now, a sweet reminder to keep it real. Rolling through everything from the rootsy Jeep to sultry Crazy From the Heat, this record shows many colors yet remains as cohesive as a rainbow. Her wildly talented band joins her to create a truly magical sound.

LYRICS TO THE SONGS ON THE 2ND ALBUM:

BE HERE NOW
Be here now, don’t worry about what is to come
Take a vow to be while you become
It’s all unfolding, we can’t control it – all we can do is be here now.

Gone is gone, what is done is in the past
We move on, love is the thing that will last
You must believe it to receive it – know that I love you; be here now.

We channel the love of Jah flowing through us
Let your light shine – in your higher power put your trust

Learn, then let go; there is always more to know
I am you, and you, you are me, too
The key is humanity, yes, feel me love you – be here now

A BLOCK AWAY FROM HELL
Here we are, a block away from hell, and this is what it’s come to
Stuck in jobs that do not suit us well and no place left to run to
What did we do to turn this screw? You look at me – I look at you
Trapped, a block away from hell

We set out looking to find a brighter new horizon
A place to ease our troubled minds, a conscience we could count on
Comes a man – no leg to stand “Excuse me, ma’am, change, if you can”
Trapped, a block away from hell

It was not in my quickie plan to come and go like breathing
I hate to bail out on the man, but here I am just leaving
We’re worlds apart from what we know; you have to stay, I break and go
Trapped, a block away from hell

POLITICS OF MY SKIN
I’m on the outside, looking in through the politics of my skin
There’s no way out, no way in; I don’t believe that it’s a sin to be who you are

I didn’t choose to be white and black is not your “plight”
Who we are is our right come and join the peaceful fight to be who you are

I don’t mind your color, I don’t mind your clothes
I just want to love you, I just want to know who you think you are

Now can you hear me when I say there’s got to be a better way
The more in changes, the more it’s the same I want to see a brand new day to be who you are

RISE UP
Rise up, rise up, people – defend yourselves
Give up on waiting for someone else
If not you, then who? What are you gonna do?
Hang around, waiting for a clue and wasting time…

Rise up – claim your humanity
In peace resist shameless brutality
We must not take it anymore, this terrorizing war
Who decides the score? We’ve crossed a line.

Rise up with the courage to do what must be done
Take up the cause for peace that has begun
Do not give in to apathy, too many people still ain’t free
Don’t believe the lie that we must wage war to gain such beauty, to be free

SURRENDER YOURSELF TO THE GROOVE
Surrender yourself to the groove, let your body move
Come on, Baby – prove that you can feel it
Funk is in the air, music everywhere
Dance if you dare to reveal it

Bring it – bring on the funk, y’all
Bring it – bring on your righteous ray of funk

Sing, dance, and shout, turn this mother out
What it’s all about is the groovin’
Just do what feels right, grab your baby tight
Tonight’s the perfect night for movin’

Surrender yourself to the groove, let your body move
Come on, Baby – prove that you can feel it
Groove right out of your skin, let the positive in
Loving is no sin, so don’t conceal it

ALL NIGHT DANCING
Baby, let me take you dancing all night, all night dancing, me and you
Baby, let me take you dancing all night, all night dancing, just us two

We got lanterns burning in the backyard, everybody doin what they do
Holding hands and kissing in the moonlight – everybody deep into the groove

Somebody’s gonna bust out singin, somebody’s gonna roll on the floor
Everybody dancing in the moonlight, dancin’ like they never did before

East side, west side, north side, everybody from the south side, too
Coming all together in the moonlight, dancing ‘til the day is new

Let the groove just take you, let the world slip away
Let go of your troubles, everybody – dance clear into day

Shake your booty with me, Darlin’ – let me take you way on down the road
Wind it up and turn it out ‘til daybreak; baby let me deep into your soul

Sunrise and it’s me and you walking, yeah, baby, strolling hand in hand
Still caught in the rhythm of the moonlight, still caught in the swingin’ of the band

JEEP
Someone set my truck on fire, burned just like a funeral pyre
Smoked enough to raise the dead. Meanwhile I was asleep in bed

Ain’t nothing like waking up to your truck burning down
Turn your sleeping, dreamy smile right into a frown

Husband thought it was some punks messin’ around with our junk
But when the smoke had rolled on back we saw that fire girl swingin’ her axe

Burn, burn, burn – truck’s long gone

Husband said, “Hey, looky here – truck’s on fire, now ain’t that weird?”
Took a minute for me to catch on: my sweet ride was gone, Daddy, gone

Goodbye, Jeep

CRAZY FROM THE HEAT
Woke up this morning, ninety-five degrees; too much sun
By lunchtime – wilting all the trees; too much sun
Evening time brought the city to its knees; too much sun
Now we’re crazy, crazy from the heat; too much sun

Crazy, crazy from the heat…

Tell me where do light and darkness meet?
Can’t take, can’t take all this heat
Nighttime just simmers in the pot
No way to get away from hot

The mind goes drifting far away on some cool holiday
But then you realize you just wanna stay…

Sun comes up, we’re still on the beach
Moon’s still up – white sand, blue water, coconut palm tree
Ain’t no reason to leave here, you and me
Let’s just stay here all crazy from the heat

FIVE O’CLOCK WORLD
Up every mornin just to keep my job
I gotta fight my way through the hustling mob
Sounds of the city poundin’ in my brain
While another day goes down the drain

But it’s a five o’clock world when the whistle blows
No one owns a piece of my time
And there’s a five o’clock me inside my clothes
Thinkin’ that the world looks fine, yeah

Tradin’ my time for the pay I get
Livin’ on money that I ain’t made yet
Gotta keep goin’, gotta make my way
While I live for the end of the day

‘Cause it’s a five o’clock world when the whistle blows
No one owns a piece of my time
There’s a long-haired boy who waits, I know
To ease my troubled mind, yeah

In the shelter of his arms everything’s OK
He talks and the world goes slippin’ away
And I know the reason I can still go on
When every other reason is gone

In my five o’clock world he waits for me
Nothing else matters at all
‘Cause every time my baby smiles at me
I know that it’s all worthwhile

I NEED THE BREAD
I need the bread – oh, I need the bread every day, Lord
I need the bread raining down on me,
I need the bread when life brings me to my knees

Not talking about bread for my table, I’m talking bread for my soul
I know only Jah is able to fill my life and make it whole

I can eat milk and honey, I can wear diamonds and pearls
But I’ll get more for my money if I share it with the world

Life is hard, the world is troubled – seems there’s no relief
When it all gets doubled – only one thing you need

Lay down before your Maker, rest in the beautiful peace
I’ll tell you what’s at stake here – mm, sweet release

THE REAL ME
I feel the air around you before you’re in my view
You see, it’s true, my love – the best of me is you
Oo-wee – you bring out the real me

I’m always in motion, tryin’ to figure me out
But you’ve got your eye on me, you know what I’m all about
Oo-wee – you bring out the real me

Keepin’ myself guarded, don’t want to let them see
Just how much I hold inside, just how much I need
Early in the morning ‘til starlight shinin’ bright
They’ll never know how I feel about you, or why I don’t sleep at night

You are a divining rod right into my soul
If not for you, my love, I’d lose all control
Oo-wee – you bring out the real me

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?
What would happen if we all laid down our guns?
What would happen if we stopped killing everyone?
What would happen if we all just got along?
What would happen; would there be peace?

What would happen if we all just learned to love?
What would happen if we prayed to Jah above?
What would happen if we knew that was enough?
What would happen; would there be joy?

Everybody needs something, but nobody needs war
You say it’s sometimes necessary, but I don’t believe it anymore…

What would happen if we all just did our best?
What would happen if we gave our greed a rest?
What would happen if we really put it to the test?
What would happen; would there be life?

What would happen, if we slowed ourselves down?
What would happen if we took a good look around?
What would happen if we really listened to the sound of our planet?
We’d carry on. Whatever happens – carry on…
